ABDULELAH SALEH ALSHAWLI

 Assistant Professor

Profile

Welcome...

I am Abdulelah Saleh Abdullah Alshawli - Assistant Professor- at Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences, King Abdulaziz University.

I got my Bachelor degree from Medical Technology Program (1998). Since then I had worked as a laboratory technologist in immunology laboratory at King Abdulaziz University Hospital. And in 2001 I had worked in Diagnostic Genomic Medicine Unit as a laboratory technologist for almost seven years. In 2008 I joined the Molecular Medicine Program at the University of Sheffield Medical School (United Kingdom).  I honoured the Merit Degree in my MS.c degree. And in 2010 I worked as a Lab Manager for the Diagnostic Medicine Unit & Centre of Excellence in Genomic Medicine Research.  At this position, I have improved the performance of the diagnostic and research services by applying the skills I gained in my master degree and during my job carrier. Also I leaded the CAP (College of American Pathologist) team to standardize the diagnostic services. I had been required to participate in, and manage, teams of up to sixty members. My management style is participative with a focus on developing and empowering others to achieve work objectives.

My ambition is seeking more knowledge and experience in human genetics research to establish an advance research approaches and to transfer the knowledge and experience to the coming generations of students. Therefore, my aim was getting a lecturer position, and in 2014 I achieved my goal by getting a lecturer position at King Fahad Medical Research Centre.  In 2014, I started my PhD degree program at the University of Leeds.  My research work was in investigating the cellular and anti-cancer effects of REST (Repressor Element 1 Silencing Transcription Factor) and HDAC (Histone Deacetylase) inhibition in Daoy medulloblastoma cells.

Currently, I am supervising the Cancer Biology lab at King Fahad Medical Research Centre, King Abdulaziz University.

My strengths include the ability to solve problems and managing the situation during hard times. I am very adaptable and accepting of change with new processes and ideas.  I want to move ahead towards perfection in genetic, epigenetic, and nanoencapsulation of cancer drugs.

Research Interests

My research interest is mainly focusing on human molecular genetics and epigenetics in cancer. This includes identifying the epigenetic regulatory elements, the role of coding and non-coding genetic materials in regulating gene expression and interaction, improving the epigenetic drug efficiency through using the nanoencapsulation,  and using the in vivo and in vitro experimental model to examine the their efficiency. I am also a great interest in gene expression analysis using Single Cell Next Generation Sequencing (scNGS). I have an excellent experience in scNGS experimental designing and data analysis using Seurat R package.

Currently, I am a principle investigator and Co-investigator in:

  • Deanship of Scientific Research (DSR) general grant, King Abdulaziz University, as a principal investigator: “Nanoparticle encapsulation of MS-275 epigenetic drug to enhance its anticancer effect”. 2021
  • DSR general grant as Co-investigator: “Establishment of Genetic polymorphism in MDR1 gene as a prognostic marker for colorectal carcinoma (CRC) Susceptibility and Chemotherapeutic Response in Saudi ethnicities”. 2019
  • DSR general grant as Co-investigator: “Identification and Validation of In?ammatory Cytokines as a Potential Diagnostic and Prognostic Markers in Ovarian Cancer”. 2021
  • DSR general grant as Co-investigator: “Identification and Validation of In?ammatory Cytokines as a Potential Diagnostic and Prognostic Markers in Colorectal Carcinoma in Saudi Arabia”.
